What is the Cathay Pacific 24-hour Hackathon?

The Cathay Pacific 24-hour Hackathon is an annual event where a select group of applicants will be given 24 hours to develop an innovative technology solution for travellers. As part of this elite group, you’ll work together with a range of students, professionals, and experts who share the same passion for tech and travel, and with whom you’ll collaborate to achieve success.

This signature event – hosted at Cathay Pacific’s headquarters – will allow you to bring your ideas into the real world. You will be challenged with real business problems, and will have the chance to pitch your unique solutions to influential industry professionals.

Join us on 3-4 November 2018 at Cathay Pacific City, as we embark on an exciting journey to bring “Smart Travel” ideas from future to present.

Winners from 2017 enjoying an unforgettable visit to Dublin

As one of the prizes from last year’s Hackathon, the champion team was invited on a trip to Dublin to visit the offices of leading technology companies, including Facebook, Accenture and Microsoft. It was an insightful visit, with live demonstrations of some of the latest technologies. The team also joined the celebration of the launch of direct service between Dublin and Hong Kong and took the first flight back to Hong Kong!

Frequently asked questions

Prior to the event, we will host a series of exciting activities. You'll be able to gain an exclusive insider understanding of our airline operations, and partake in ‘empathy days’ and technical workshops provided by our partners, all in preparation for the big event.

On the day of the event, mentors from Cathay Pacific will be present to provide support to all participants. Guidance will be provided on airline industry knowledge, technical development, prototype design, as well as presentation skills. Partner organizations from different technological areas, including cloud service provider Amazon Web Services, will also provide technical support and advice on the spot.

We want you to understand how we operate as an international carrier, and we hope you can develop systems that can meet our challenges and make both our customers and our employees happy. Therefore, we have organized a series of Empathy Days to allow you to have a comprehensive understanding of our operations – you will have the opportunity to observe and experience our operations and the technologies we use. You will be able to talk directly to our people, both working on the frontline and behind the scenes.

Don’t miss this exclusive opportunity as there are limited places for each Empathy Day! More details of Empathy Days and enrollment specifics will be announced on the participant portal.

Teams must consist of at least 3, and no more than 5 people. Each team must also comprise of all 3 roles (Product Master, Designer and Developer).

Participants may apply as a pre-formed team, or join as an individual (forming a team on our platform before the Hackathon).

For pre-formed teams:

  • To apply as a pre-formed team, please submit a team application form together with all your team members.
  • Applicants who have submitted an individual application will not be able to apply as a team member of a pre-formed team.
  • In the event that we receive an excess of applications, all applications will be subjected to the same review process to select participants for the event.

Yes, you are welcome to apply as an individual without any pre-formed team members.

You will have the opportunity to know other participants and form your own team on our participant portal after the confirmation of your attendance. Otherwise, you can join others' teams, or form your own team on the morning of 3 November.

Yes, you can choose to apply on an individual basis or with a pre-formed team representing your company.

The application for our professional stream is closed, all successful applicants have been informed.

Application for our student stream will close on 23 September 2018 and all successful applicants will be informed of their application results by email on or before 28 September 2018.

Since laptops will NOT be provided at the venue, you must bring your own laptop and any other required electronic devices.

You should also bring an extra set of clothing, as the event will last overnight.

Participants will present their ideas and conduct a live-demo in their first round pitch, while Top 6 teams will then have the final round pitch to the Judging Panel.

You must present a functional demo of your idea at the pitch sessions on 4 November. The prototype should demonstrate the key features, but not in alternative forms such as presentation slides - it has to be the real thing!
