Frequently asked questions

A hackathon is an event, typically lasting from one day to a couple of days, in which a large number of people meet and collaborate in innovation and software development activities.

Participants normally work in teams to solve a challenge and create workable solutions. At the end of a hackathon, teams will demonstrate their ideas to judges in short and intense pitches.

Cathay Pacific had its first ever 24-Hour Hackathon on 22-23 October 2016, and it was a great success! Check out the highlights here.

This Hackathon is targeted towards current university students, but it is open to the public and we welcome applications from non-university students as well, including secondary school students and industry professionals.

Applicants must apply in one of the following roles: Product Master, Designer, or Developer.

Our Hackathon this year will be putting the customer in the spotlight - join us in creating solutions that aim at enhancing customers' LifeWellTravelled experience with Cathay.

Teams must consist of at least 3, and no more than 5 people. Each team must also comprise of all 3 roles (Product Master, Designer and Developer).

Participants may apply as a pre-formed team (please specify in application form), or join as an individual (forming team on our platform before the Hackathon).

For pre-formed teams:

  • Each member must also submit their own application separately.
  • Please nominate a team leader and fill in that person's email address in your application forms (for grouping and communication only).
  • In the event that we receive an excess of applications, all applications will be subject to the same review process to select participants for the event. Hence, please understand that we cannot guarantee a place for all members in the same team.

Yes, you are welcome to apply as an individual without any pre-formed team members.

You will have the opportunity to know other participants and form your own team on our platform after the confirmation of your attendance. Otherwise, you can join others' teams, or form your own team in the morning of 21 October.

The application will close on 2 October, and all successful applicants will receive a confirmation email with further details by 9 October.

Since laptops will NOT be provided at the venue, you must bring your own laptop and any other required electronic devices.

You should also bring an extra set of clothing, as the event will last overnight.

Proper meals (including a lunch buffet!) will be provided, in addition to snacks and beverages.

Mentors from Cathay Pacific will be present on the event day to provide support to all participants. Guidance will be provided on airline industry knowledge, technical development, prototype design, as well as presentation skills.

Partner organisations from different technological areas, including inflight entertainment system provider Panasonic Avionics and cloud service provider Amazon Web Services, will also provide technical support and advice on the day.

They must be submitted to the platform provided by Cathay Pacific. More information about the platform will be provided at an appropriate time. The last uploaded copy of the presentation will be the one used in the pitch sessions.

You must present a functional demo of your idea at the pitch sessions on 22 October. The prototype should demonstrate the key features, but not in alternative forms such as presentation slides - it has to be the real thing!

For the first round of pitches, teams will have just 2 minutes to present their ideas and demos, followed by 2 minutes of Q&A.

For the final round of pitches, the top 6 teams from the first round will present once more to the entire judging panel. The teams will have 3 minutes to pitch and 3 minutes of Q&A.

The Champion team will be awarded with either one of the following, subject to individual eligibility:

  • Non-final year university students (subject to work visa approval) will be offered to join the eight-week IT Internship Programme in summer 2018, or
  • Applicants of the 2018 IT Graduate Trainee Programme will be offered a fast track to final stage of the selection process.
